Theresa and Calvin Curameng make their dream of owning a studio a reality by opening College Park Yoga in Orlando, Florida.
What year was your studio founded? We dreamed of making it a reality in 2000 and we found the perfect location in 2001.
Number of members: We have over 10,000 lovely students.
Number of locations: One.
What is one of the most interesting or unique features about the yoga studio? Our studio is a beautiful mid-century modern red brick and aluminum building built in 1958. It is one of the few original buildings still around in Orlando. Orlando has a tendency to tear down iconic spaces for something newer. We transformed an unloved, old warehouse into a glorious and comfortable space for yoga practice.
What is one key to your yoga studio’s success? Our total non-competitiveness. We utilize our yoga practice as a business practice and this has helped us maintain an ethical business. Running our studio isn’t ever about what others are doing. It is purely the love of a disciplined practice that helps us grow.
What is one piece of advice you could give to other studio owners? Stay true to the initial reason you opened in the first place. Hopefully, you opened because you truly want to help others. Let that guide you, support you and keep you going. When the going gets tough (and it will), remember why you started this practice and why you opened your studio. After all, you are doing this to serve humanity, and that is beautiful.
